======================================================================
Compared to the last report, demand for all types of hay in Idaho is moderate.
Movement is picking up as new crop gets baled and in the stack.
Most people in Idaho are sold out of 2025 crop and the hay that is moving
down the highways is hay sold from previous contracts.
New crop hay is starting to sell and prices are higher than they were
this time last year.
Alfalfa hay in Idaho is having greater demand than in the past with other
surrounding states not having their normal hay crop this year.
People are still worried about a drought in most areas around Idaho with
the water supply still being low.
West Idaho is cutting 2nd crop and the rest of the state is starting
to cut now, some producers are late cutting due to the frost damage from
this spring and others are going to start cutting even though its shorter
and not as good quality.
The hay yields around the whole state are going to be short this year
with most of the state having some form of frost damage and with water
shortages.
Farmers that rely on mountain water runoff have already had water shut
off or are going to have the water shut off soon.
Farmers that pump water from wells are a little better off but they will
also be short water this year.
According to the U.S.
Drought Monitor Website, most of the state is under moderate drought
to severe drought with patches of extreme drought spread out from East
Idaho to Southern Idaho.
Exceptional drought is showing up in southwest Idaho.
Most of the big hay producing areas in Idaho are under extreme drought.
